| The Durkan CTS Gauge provides a
quantitative method for diagnosing and monitoring patients with
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). |

A specially calibrated,
dial-type gauge provides accurate measurements of the amount of applied pressure.
This constant pressure (usually 12 - 15 lbs per square inch) is applied for up
to 30 seconds. Reproduction of symptoms (numbness or tingling in the median
nerve distribution) within 30 seconds is a positive screening test for carpal
tunnel syndrome (89%sensitivity and 96%specificity). The reproduction of
median nerve symptoms elicited with the Durkan CTS Gauge also rules out other
conditions that can mimic carpal tunnel syndrome (eg. cervical disk disease, thoracic
outlet syndrome, and proximal median-nerve compression neuropathies).

As noted in the clinical information
section of this website, the value of the Durkan CTS gauge was
presented in a recent article in the Journal of Hand
Surgery.(Szabo,RM et al .).The authors found that in patients with
abnormal hand diagrams, a positive Durkan CTS test, abnormal
sensibility by Semes-Weinstein testing and night pain, the
probability the CTS will be diagnosed is 0.86. If all 4 of these
conditions are normal, the probability of that the patients have CTS
is 0.0068. The addition of electrodiagnistic testing did not
increase the diagnostic power of the combination of these 4 clinical
